If you can't win the whole tournament, at least catch the biggest fish.

"Arizona bass fishing is hot right now," said Brian Soefje. "With water temps around 60 degrees at our local lakes around Phoenix, the bass are either staging to move up or have moved up to find their spawning areas. While fishing a local kayak tourney here on Apache Lake my plan was to run a deep crankbait in typical shad patterns to target bass in that 15-20 foot range in the early AM. This plan paid off with this beauty of a largemouth that earned me big fish prize of the tourney.

I did not weigh it as the tourney was CPR but she was a fat 21.5 inches on the measuring board, so take your guess. As the water heated up during the day my strategy changed to working a jerk / rip bait in shallow water. Utilizing both techniques produced a good day and put me in 2nd place for the tourney overall. The big fish prize was a bonus that helped console the fact that I missed 1st place by 1 inch. So close, next time!"
