Columbia Outdry Extreme will redefine waterproof and breathable material. Ric Burnley

Columbia's new Outdry Extreme fabric is breathable and waterproof without an outter membrane. Traditional breathable outwear is three-layers with a breathable layer sandwiched between a waterproof coated outer layer and softer inner layer. The problem is when the outer layer eventually wears away, the fabric loses its waterproof quality. After years of research and development, Columbia has turned waterproof/breathable material inside out. Now the waterproof material is on the outside and breathable membrane on the inside. With no coating, the material won't loose waterproof properties. And the breathable lining has microscopic perforations to let vapor escape without letting water enter. The outter material is glossy and slick, so it resists stains and wear better than other breathable materials. Outdry Extreme will be available on a Force 12 jacket and bib. The jacket features waterproof zippers and fold down pocket openings to keep contents dry. There are three cellphone pockets: one inside the jacket, one on the sleeve and one onthe chest that has a plastic window that allows the wearer to operate the smartphone without removing it from the pocket. Elbows and waiste are reinforced for extra strength at wear points.
