Follow along as a Wisconsin angler fishes the Extreme Kayak Fishing tournament

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read stories, watched videos and looked at photos of the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament Sailfish Smackdown (EKFT) and dreamed of participating. The two-day offshore fishing tournament out of Pompano Beach, Florida is high on my bucket list.

Well, Kayak Angler contributor and host of Jonesin’ for video series, Spencer Jones has checked the EKFT off his bucketlist and shared his experience in a 34-page ebook.

Jones, and his fishing buddy Israel Dunn, drove for 26 hours straight from upper Wisconsin to southern Florida to participate in the tournament. They fished day and night and learned valuable lessons for anglers who hope to follow in their footsteps.

The book covers everything an angler needs to know to pull off a similar feat. Jones describes in detail how he prepared for the tournament, packed his gear, traveled and fished. He offers great advice on rigging a kayak and prepping baits. I like his emphasis on keeping it simple and keeping it light. This allows him to prepare quicker and paddle faster making him more competitive in the tournament. Jones even lists specific gear to bring along and what to leave behind.

I like the step-by-step photos of rigging baits with circle hooks and adding weight to the line. Jones adds suggestions for storing live baits. He makes practical selections for rods, reel, line and leader. This is a nuts-and-bolts guide to taking the fishing trip of a lifetime.

Some lessons were learned the hard way. The landlocked anglers didn’t bring the right cart for wheeling their kayaks across the sand. As a result, they had to create a harness out of kayak straps and drag their boats over the beach.

The short book is just the beginning of Jones’ EKFT coverage. He shares links to videos and web content in the final pages of the book. Then, he invites readers to share their stories and photos of adventures on the high seas.

Jonesin’ for Beyond the Breakers is a practical guide for fishing the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament or any trip of a lifetime. I love the incredible detail and valuable advice that Jones shares, but I’m jonesin’ for more fishing stories from the road and the water. Hopefully, Jones will make another trip and write more books about his adventures. I’m putting that on my bucket list.
