Expert tips on tying down your SUP

Transporting your first kayak or paddleboard on top of your vehicle can be scary. Are you tying it down right? Do you need more straps? Can your vehicle bare the load? The video below will show you three ways to safely transport a paddleboard.

The first way is to use a soft foam block, or if you want a more permanent soft solution, a soft rack that straps to your car. When strapping a paddleboard to a car with no roof-rack, you must put the straps all the way over the car and the inside roof of the car, through open doors.

When using a permanent hard rack to strap down your paddleboard, you need adequate padding so you don't damage the board by cranking down on it while it is resting on a hard surface.

When you load the paddleboard, make sure it is upside down and the handle is dead center between your crossbars. The put your strap under the rack, leaving slack on both ends and place it over the paddlebord. On the other side of the paddleboard, you repeat the process, going under the rack. Then you tighten down the strap.
