The Trade Association of Paddlesports Announces Event Details for Inaugural North East Canoe Kayak Symposium
Three-day paddling festival to gather east coast paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts for beginner and advanced clinics, product demos and sea kayaking celebrity guest
MILNER, British Columbia - July 9, 2008 - The Trade Association of Paddlesports (TAPS), a non-profit trade association supporting the paddling industry in North America, today announced event details for the North East Canoe Kayak Symposium (NECKS) September 5-7, 2008 at the Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton, N.J.
A three-day festival open to the public, the NECKS event offers paddling seminars, new product demos and beach-side exhibits for paddlers of all ages and skill levels.
"Spruce Run Recreation Area's more than 1,300 feet of beach front, along with some amazing water, is the perfect backdrop for our first east coast event," said Michael Pardy, executive director of TAPS. "Situated one hour west of Manhattan and Newark and 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, we hope this event serves as a gathering of the east coast paddling tribe; an event that will attract both experienced and novice paddlers and their families."
Classes
During the day, attendees can participate in one of a number of classes that best meet their needs. Topics range from Kayak Canoe First Strokes, Kayak Canoe Advanced Strokes Maneuvers, Greenland Paddling and Kayak Canoe Basic Rescues.
Other ongoing daily clinics include topics such as:
Charts;
Compasses and Crossings: Basic Navigation Skills for Paddlers;
Weather Considerations While Sea Kayaking Kayak; and
Camera, Sea: Digital Photography While Kayaking.
John Bowerman
Event attendees are invited to spend Saturday evening, September 6, with National Geographic writer and explorer Jon Bowermaster and preview the new sea kayak adventure film, Oceans 8. The film documents a series of Bowermaster's expeditions to explore the worlds' oceans from the seat of a sea kayak along with local cultures, histories and environmental issues.
North East Kayak Polo Tournament
On Saturday and Sunday evening attendees will enjoy watching the North East Kayak Polo Tournament. Similar to water polo, two teams in small kayaks move the ball by throwing it, dribbling it, passing it to a team member or shooting it at the opposing team's goal. When a player is in possession of the ball, an opposing player may hand tackle him with a hand push on the upper body or kayak tackle their boat to force the player in possession to lose control of the ball. Teams from Boston, Toronto, Texas, along with nationally ranked players will be participating.
The North East Canoe Kayak Symposium hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Beach-only passes give attendees unlimited access to the product demos for $20. Daily Passes which give access to the product demos, clinic and seminars and keynote presentations can be purchased for $75 per day or $200 for a weekend pass. A special $375 family rate is available for registrants before August 15.
