La Tuque, May 12th 2008 -  For a second year in a row the kayaking club Les Billots et la Pitoune with the collaboration of Patagonia Footwear presents the Mauricie Whitewater Festival on May 30th and 31st and June 1st.

For a second year in a row the kayaking club Les Billots et la Pitoune with the collaboration of Patagonia Footwear presents the Mauricie Whitewater Festival on May 30-31st and June 1st.

The goal of this festival is to promote the recreational potential of the region and especially its rivers. We are pursuing 3 goals: promote whitewater sports in our region, promote the potential of the rivers in our region and create a professional creekboat race. The goal: To be the leader in whitewater festivals in Quebec.

To facilitate the whitewater accessibility to our local population, discount price on rafting and whitewater kayaking introduction courses are given.

We are also offering shuttles on two different rivers. One on the Bostonnais River (15km of class II-III), this year a water release will guaranty a pleasant water level.  In addition, a free shuttle will be available all day on Sunday June 1st on the Mattawin River (5km of continuous class III-IV rapids) for experienced paddlers to go down the river as many times as they want.

The professional event will be an extreme creekboat race on the Petite Bostonnais River. The racers will have to paddle a 510m section of class IV-V rapids including two impressive consecutive 3m waterfalls.  The Wayagamak Waterfall hiking paths will enable the spectators to contemplate the kayaker’s temerity. The participants will compete for a 2500$ prize (highest prize given to a kayak race in Quebec).  The festival will also provide a dam controlled water level to ensure adequate descent conditions.

New this year is a freestyle ramp that will be built on the festival’s site in the La Bostonnais Municipality
