  • Ian created a new topic Anchoring in the kayak - complete guide.... in the forum.
I get asked alot of questions about anchoring in the kayak, so I thought I would make some videos to show how I do it.

I have tried to give an overview of the anchor system components and both the quick release and non-quick release mnethods are demonstrated showing anchor deployment and retrieval.

  • Ian created a new topic Just to prove we do get colourful fish sometimes ! in the forum.
Normally, you would not associate the UK with unusual/exotic/colourful fish - but we do get occasional exotic visitors to our shores, brought here on the warm Gulf stream currents.

One such visitor is the Gilthead bream - it is more commonly found in southern Europe - the Mediterranean and Spain, but very occasionally we get them in our estuaries in the UK. I have been trying to catch one from the kayak for over 4 years; its become an obsession... this year, I was determined to be one of the very few people in the UK to catch one... Last week, I ended my search in style...

Not bad for my first Gilt, and just check out the dentures on these things... awesome....

The same weekend, I wanted to catch probably the most colourful fish in the UK; the Cuckoo Wrasse. These fish are almost tropical in their colouration. I managed to catch a few, and what they lack in size, they more than make up for in appearance...

It was one of the most memorable and enjoyable weekend's kayak fishing I have ever experienced in the UK - all made possible by a couple of friends who told me the most important thing in kayak fishing... "Where and when" !

A video short of the cuckoo wrasse...

The colours on those things are brilliant.

I have also recently written a FREE guide to kayak fishing which I am giving away via the link below. Time to give something back to the sport which has given me so much. Feel free to download a copy and let me know what you think (its aimed at beginners, but I have had lots of great complements from experienced yak fishermen who learnt a few new tricks)...

  • Ian created a new topic I know a good plaice.... in the forum.
Winter in the UK can be a grim affair, cold and windy, but occasionally we get a short period of settled weather. I spotted a likely looking opportunity on the 5 day weather forecast and took a gamble, booking the day off work. Things were still looking good the day before my planned launch. A 5am start saw me peeping out of the bedroom window - to my dismay it was really foggy. I was disappointed, but not put off. The 3 hour journey to Devon was not fun, visibility was only a few feet in places. Eventually I got to the small village of Hallsands. A ghostly place - the village was washed into the sea about a hundred years ago after a big storm, and only a couple of ruined houses remain. My friends Tim and Mark soon arrived, but the weather was still not looking good - we wanted to paddle out to a famous sandbank called the Skerries, where we hoped to catch some early plaice (flatfish). We decided to launch, and stayed in close in the hope that the mist might lift, allowing us to get out to the Skerries bank.

I managed to catch some mackerel which is almost unheard of in the UK at this time of year - the seasons all seem to be a bit topsy-turvey at the moment - global warming maybe, who knows.

To cut a long story short, we managed to get out to the skerries and we caught a lots of tasty plaice...

I managed to catch these two on a single wishbone rig...

    Final tally...

A short video, just to show how clam conditions were (thjis is very rare in the UK !).

More info onthe blog, if you are interested...

  • Ian created a new topic Crazy mini shark session... in the forum.
A recent trip to the rugged shores of North Devon in Southwest of the UK, brought a few surprises. I used the side imaging sonar to locate a new mark, very close to

shore and passed by about 99.9% of boat fishermen on their way to deeper water. Well after our trip, they might think twice !

Myself and my kayak fishing buddy started picking up fish right from the word "GO"... small turbo charged mini shark or smoothounds. Adam was doing well...

And I was having some real scraps on my light gear - the fish really go well on this set up - Shimano Calcutta 400 loaded with 12lb line and a new COnoflex Jedi QT

kayak rod with a yellow spliced tip - a fantastic bit of gear which really showed its strength...

We also had pouting, rockling, pollack and ballan wrasse...

But the smoothounds were the highlight, and we really bagged up with fish in the 8 to 10lb bracket...

A day to remember, and a video to savour...

    Enjoy !

Rudy Tsukada Looks like a blast on an ultralight. That's an assortment of fish you don't often see here on pacific northwest coast of the U.S. Bought some underwater lights to try and hunt some squid up here in Alaska. I hear they are around but can't seem to find anyone who know exactly where and when.

I havent been kayak fishing much this year, so apologies for not posting much.

Its autumn in the UK at the moment, so the wind is blowing and things are starting to chill down; but a couple of weeks back, we had some really unseasonal hot weather, and I just had to get out on the kayak.

I hope the video cheers you up as much as it does me, sitting listening to the wind blow and thinking of happier times on the water...

About Rapid Media

What began in the summer of '98 as scribbles on a bar napkin is now the world's best paddlesports media company. Rapid Media has four paddling magazines, produces an international paddling film festival, had the very first paddling and fishing magazines in iTunes, and is the official partner of both the American Canoe Association and Paddle Canada. We're proud of all this, but the real reason we're the best is because we paddle and we care.
