Pretty Water Open Invite
David, I was intending to join you, but when I woke up this morning, I had a splitting headache. By the time the ibuprofen kicked in, you were already out on the water.

Went exploring today
Ok, I'm going to try to load a pic into this, see if it works.... The put-in spot One of a few BIG carp that were surface-feeding A low-head dam. You can just barely make out the concrete above the waterline. There are two bridges in the background, one railroad, one trestle bridge. One of the spots where I had to get out. The branch on the right side of my yak is about head-high when I was in my boat. It's been chewed on by a beaver. I think I got a pic of the lodge, but I'm not totally sure. It got tighter the further upstream I went. Unfortunately, I didn't think to takes pics that far in. I do have a bit of video. I might upload that to my youtube here in a bit.

Next NEOKA Club meeting: June 11th, Birch Lake
And here's the additional details! The North East Oklahoma Kayak Anglers group (NEOKA) will be meeting at Birch Lake for a little morning fishing and lunch afterwards. We will provide the lunch, so if you are planning on coming please RSVP so that I make sure we have enough. We will be meeting at Twin Cove near the boat ramp at 6:00 for the early launch, or come out later and just meet up with us on the lake. Look forward to seeing you out there! B) Tight Lines, DD

Who all was wanting to learn how to throw a cast-net and fish for Stripers at the Pedestian Bridge?
I think we're going to have to at least change locations and/or strategies. I just checked the release schedule for Keystone, and they should have just turned on ONE of the turbines, and will turn on the SECOND turbine in 35 minutes. By the time we can hook up at the Ped Bridge, the water will be so high that the rock bar will pretty much be completely underwater. It's not safe to wade in those conditions. Bait will be hard to catch as well. The way I see it, we can do: 1) Meet up at the time you propose, but up below Keystone dam, on the north bank, and compete for space with all the other striper guys. 2) Meet up at the Ped Bridge at the time you propose, and fish for sand bass. Drop me an email at allenok1973@yahoo.com or call me, 918.213.3121

What are folks catchin fish on here in OK?
Hey Kip, most of the big females have already spawned and post spawn is always a tough time but the good news is there are strategies that do work during this time of year. Shallow water fishing is usally good right now for the males who are up guarding the nests but the size will generally be in the 12 to 15 inch range and flipping salt craws or Texas rigged lizards works well like David said earlier. To catch the larger females, you will need to target transition areas used between spawning areas and where they will spend the summer which are mainlake points and secondary points at the mouth of the creeks. I've had luck the past couple of weeks using deep-diving crankbaits on mainlake points in 10 to 15 feet of water or dragging a carolina rig craw or 10 inch worm, but remember the key is to cover a lot of water until you locate the more productive points. Hope this helps and good luck Kip.

fishin in the wichita mountains
Gorgeous country down there. I've never fished it, but I need to take the family down there camping so I'd have an excuse :-) One of the other OK guys I follow on 'youtube' has some decent video from down there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-kGGO5S-XY

Were there any folks from the OKC area at the get together at Okmulgee Lake?
If you like going down South in OK you have to go to the Blue River near Tishamingo (close to Texhoma) and I hear but haven't fished it in a long time, that Lake Murray has some good small and largemouth fishing. I recently fished a small lake South of Spiro called, of course L. Spiro. didn't catch anything but got a few bites and had about a 6 lber swim by me. it was a really pretty lake and lots of access around it for getting a kayak in the water. Give me a holler sometime and maybe we can get together for an outing.

I figured out how to download pictures of my kayak on my profile but don't know how to get them on this discussion page. Go to my profile to view the cheap beach chair set up and the pvc clip I installed on my standup stabilizer bar.

Coming out of Dry-Dock!
@ Russell, we're going to be moving a few miles south of Mounds. Going to be a bit longer drive to work, but it will put me closer to Beggs City Lake, Dripping Springs, and Okmulgee City Lake. @ David Dixon, I've been fishing there about once a week for the past few weeks. I haven't caught anything! Other folks are catching, but I haven't really been able to get lucky. You have to time it right with the sunrise, beat other folks to the good spots, and hope the river level doesn't get to high.

Possible recon trip
I'm not sure when I'll be able to try it. I just thought I'd let some of you all know about it. Nice job on the striper. I took my twin boys to the pedestrian bridge Monday; Ronnie caught a LMB about 2 - 2 1/2 lbs.

Any Interest in forming a Kayak Fishing Club?
Heard from a guy on the notebook that routinely fishes Okmulgee Lake and he said it's an excellent Crappie Lake. Let's go with that! I'll make some posts on this site and others... March 19th, Okmulgee Lake - Fish On!

Question about the Pump Back
Across the road from Pumpback on the North side. It's a private spring fed creek with stocked fish. The first day of our weekend was perfect weather. My wife caught (8) bows without any help from me. That's a first for her. I caught 30+. The second day was colder and we had bad hangovers...(we were celebrating our 15 yr aniv) so we only fished for about an hour. I've excited to try out Pumpback in a few weeks if this warmer weather keeps up.

Pretty Water or Lower Illinois this Saturday Afternoon. Any takers?
If it keeps up like this, it might freeze over thick enough to ice fish. Got your auger and jigglestick?

I'm back!
I know where you can catch all the crappie you want. Only problem is there isn't any size to them. Maybe use them for blue cat and flathead bait :)

Russ, I'm going to be addding to the fleet in the spring, so I've been reading up on different Kayaks again...I keep coming back to the Tarpon 12 or Tarpon 14. I love my Tarpon 10s but would like something bigger. Interesting to here about the Hobie Mirage having a cluttered deck...I'd never really thought about that, but I can see how that would be the case...Of course, it would be nice to be able to 'cast' while you 'peddle'.... --DD

Hey, David Dixon!
I have tried it several times at night. I've used various floating and suspending minnowbaits, trying to catch Sandies and Saugers, with no luck. I've gone several times, fishing for catfish at night as well. Again, no luck. I have no idea why I couldn't catch anything when I was night fishing for Saugers. It's possible I just wasn't there at the right time, as changing flow levels, time of night, moon, etc., all play into when they bite. It also doesn't help that there's a curfew. I've heard that as long as you're fishing from the bank, cops don't really care; but don't fish from the bridge itself after curfew. If you're brave enough to wade out onto the rock bar at night, I don't think the cops will bother you. I'm hoping that it starts raining somewhere in the Arkansas watershed on a steady basis here soon. If the lake comes up to normal level, the Corps will start releasing water for longer periods. Current flow seems to be the trick for catching fish. Decent flow levels mean good catfishing. I'm anxious to try the winter Blue Catfish bite. I've caught some Skipjack Herring on the west bank as well. The ones I caught were good sized; a couple pounds each. I didn't know what they were when I caught them, so I released them. They make GREAT cat bait. I'm wanting to catch some and freeze them for use at a later time for catfish bait.

Oklahoma Boater Safety Course
I read through that site when I first bought my kayak this last summer. That is what prompted me to buy the running lights for my kayak. I took my kayak out at night once this summer and I felt safer knowing larger boats can identify me. I still stayed close to shore though just to be safe. As far as right of way, I don't really see myself paddling fast enough to have to worry about that.

@Danny, Good luck on Monday! I'm going to try my hand at a little duck hunting this evening, so I probabaly won't get to fish again till next weeked...Sometime before it gets too cold I want to try my hand at some Sandbass/Wiper fishing below keystone.... --DD

Russ, A simple fix that will benefit you with added storage as well is to add a hatch behind your seat. The Academy has these hatches for about $6.00 for the 6" and all you need to do is use a jigsaw to cut the hole diameter. Next you run a bead of silicone around the hatch lid and bolt it in place. This takes about 20 minutes to do this modification and it allows you to mount your transducer right under your seat where there is no foam. Just thought I give you another option to think about Russ. http://www.kayakanglermag.com/photos/5099-jerry-l-mckibben/photo.html?albumid=62#photoid=376 See you on the water, Rick

@DP - I'm no expert on Skiatook, but I've spent a little time (on boats and Kayaks) there and have a few spots that I have graphed fish/structure, that I wouldn't mind hitting again. Sorry you can't make it this weekend, but Maybe we can join Danny for some sand bass action in a couple of weeks!

I think it's about 1/4 mile past the bridge by looking at google maps. I haven't been down there yet. Our lease land ends about a mile before it converges with Saline. This spring I'm gong to come in from the lake in my kayak or Gheenoe and explore around a bit.

Pretty Water Lake
I had pretty much the same result at pretty water on Saturday. I caught a couple perch on the fly rod a bass on a rooster tail and a catfish on corn. No trout though. I will definitely be hitting the lake again maybe around thanksgiving. Sorry you got skunked.

Anyone thought about paddling Polecat Creek?
Thanks, Todd! I've been wondering about that spot!

Hey DoubleDelta, have you paddled any part of Rock Creek?
About a month ago, I paddled from W Line down to the old low-head dam. I've never seen so many limblines and abandoned jugs before! There were several 15' deep holes, many of which had a laydown associated with them. Can we say Flathead heaven? However, I never caught any fish. I did see a few gar (spooked one with my kayak, that was fun), and a LMB or two in a shallow, weedy backwater slough. As many holes are were present in the mile of stream that I paddled, I want to see what's upstream as well. However, I don't think I'll get to far, as I seem to remember seeing a strainer that was composed of lots of limbs hung on a pipe of some kind about 2' above the water.

Looking forward to hearing how the SLV works for you :) Just wonder how easy it would be to adjust drag when the fish runs with that reel. Because how flush the drag knob is. Cool looking reel, Aaron.

Self-Rescue / Re-entry training?
I've rentered my SOT in a lake when I first got it as practice and it wasn't graceful (I looked like I was trying to hump my Kayak) but it was easily doable...But I think a Sit inside might be a little harder (Don't really know though)...
